DEFINITION:

DEFINITION:  This position is responsible for the analysis of crime and operational data.
REPORTS TO:  The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of very general instructions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

•   Collects, collates, analyzes, and disseminates crime and operational data.
•   Performs crime analysis; prepares reports, charts, graphs, and maps related to crime     patterns and trends; completes related administrative analysis, including     cost/effectiveness analysis, program evaluation, and long range forecasting;     completes related strategic analysis including exception reporting, crime trend     forecasting, and situation analysis; completes related tactical analysis, including crime     series pattern detection, crime suspect correlation, target/suspect profiles, and crime     potential forecasting.
•   Performs operational analysis; prepares reports, charts, graphs, and maps on     manpower allocation and manpower deployment; completes related operational     analysis.
•   Performs research analysis; prepares crime information for internal and external     customers in the form of reports, charts, and graphs; processes requests for crime     statistics and crime information; provides timely and accurate crime statistics and     crime information to customers.
•   Performs quality control on reports submitted by line level divisions; reviews reports for     completeness and accuracy; forwards problems to record personnel for appropriate     actions.
•   Serves as backup administrator for the police records management system and the     Computer Aided Dispatch system; assists personnel with computer related problems;     forwards problems to Information Systems personnel.
•   Performs other related duties as assigned.

                 HIRING RANGE:  $46,755 - $ 58,444       
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

•   A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science,     Information Systems, Criminal Justice, or Statistical Analysis is preferred; however     comparable experience in technology or analysis related role will be considered.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

•   Knowledge of job-related software applications including GIS, RMS, CAD, analytics,     and crystal reporting.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include incident based reporting product specifications and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.  
COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of varied data analysis duties. The need for accuracy contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to perform crime and operational analyses in support of department operations. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of department operations. 
PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with other City staff, vendors, members of the general public, business owners, and representatives of other law enforcement agencies.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects. 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.
