Mr. McDermond was appointed as ATF’s Assistant Director for the Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information in 2004.  In his role as Assistant Director he is responsible for ATF’s internal and external collection, analysis and dissemination of intelligence information in support of ATF’s mission to protect the public by reducing violent crime and preventing terrorism.  Additionally, he is responsible for ATF’s International Operations consisting of 12 attaché offices in 6 countries, and representatives stationed at INTERPOL and EUROPOL. In August of 2010, through October 2011, Mr. McDermond assumed the responsibilities of ATF’s Assistant Director for the Office of Public and Governmental Affairs, where he was responsible for both legislative and public affairs and interagency liaison. In October 2011, Mr. McDermond returned to Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information as Assistant Director.

Prior to joining ATF, Mr. McDermond had a distinguished 21 year career with the United States Secret Service having served in Philadelphia, Newark, and Washington D.C., in protective, investigative and staff assignments.  During his 21 year career, Mr. McDermond held the following leadership positions: Deputy Assistant Director, Office of Homeland Security; Special Agent in Charge/Deputy Chief Information Officer, Information Resources Management Division; Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Information Resources Management Division; and Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge, Vice Presidential Protective Division. Additionally, as a special assistant to the director, Mr. McDermond was detailed as a legislative fellow to the United States Senate, Committee on the Judiciary.

Mr. McDermond began his law enforcement career as a police officer with the Conrail Police Department in Philadelphia, followed by an assignment as a state investigator with the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety. 

Mr. McDermond has received numerous awards and commendations throughout his distinguished law enforcement career.

Mr. McDermond earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University, West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1978. He has successfully completed the Information Assurance and Chief Information Officer’s Certificate Programs at the National Defense University in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Additionally, he is a 1979 graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy.  Mr. McDermond is a member of the Senior Executive Service and attended executive development programs at the Executive Development Institute, the Center for Creative Leadership and Johns Hopkins University. Mr. McDermond successfully completed the Intelligence Community Senior Leadership Program managed by the Central Intelligence Agency, Leadership in Counterterrorism Pacific Program (LinCT), managed by the FBI and the Australian Federal Police, FBI’s National Executive Institute, Session 35, and Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security.  Mr. McDermond is an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA), the Board of Directors for the Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Units (LEIU), and the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative’s Criminal Intelligence Coordinating Council (CICC).

Mr. McDermond is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He is married and has three children.
